Choosing the right counsellor for you

Choosing the right counsellor for you

The therapeutic relationship is a key factor in the success of counselling, and it is important to find the right counsellor for you. The relationship is based on trust, respect, care and autonomy. If you choose to work with me, we will take time at our first meeting to understand your expectation of the process and establish how we will work, review progress and reach an ending.

With 6 years organisational experience as a Supervisor providing both facilitating peer group supervision and providing individual supervision sessions for counsellors and health care professionals; I am now able to offer a small number of supervision sessions per month within my private practice. I am currently completing a Level 7 Supervision qualification and as part of this I'm offering a limited number of clients up to 6 fortnightly or monthly supervision sessions, at a reduced rate of £30.00 per session, with the opportunity to continue attending sessions after this time, at the usual rate of £60.00 per hour.

F.A.Q.s
Do I need counselling?
Ultimately only you can decide if this is the right time for you to enter into counselling.  It is always your decision to start, continue or stop therapy.
You should feel confident to discuss this with your therapist at any time.

How does online Counselling differ from face-to-face?
There are many benefits to working online and some considerations, I recommend we have a conversation to discuss how it might work and how comfortable you might feel using this medium.
Here are some of the benefits:
•No need to travel as you can be in the comfort of your own home.
•    You can work with a Counsellor from anywhere in the country, giving you more choice and anonymity; this can sometimes make it easier to disclose difficult subject matter.

Is it completely confidential?
Yes - what you tell me in our sessions will remain between us only. In your initial session I will explain to you about confidentiality as there are two rare exceptions, but these relate to my responsibilities under Safeguarding legislation and are only in place for your own safety and the safety of others.

Are you Insured and accountable to anyone?
Yes, I am insured as a psychotherapist, I have regular supervision with an experienced counsellor/supervisor.  All counsellors should have regular supervision.  The supervision ensures I am balancing my own self care in order to best support you. My supervisor will also offer an external perspective on the way I am working to ensure my continued good practice.
I am also a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) as a registered member I adhere to the BACP Ethical framework, https://www.bacp.co.uk/media/3103/bacp-ethical-framework-for-the-counselling-professions-2018.pdf

Do we have a contract?
We do agree a contract at the start of our work, this is purely to ensure we have a shared understanding of the intention of the sessions and your intended outcome.  It also sets out how we will deal with cancellations, confidentiality and safeguarding responsibilities.  We talk through all of this at the first session.  You are under no obligation to continue counselling and you can choose to stop at any time.  We can review and end our work at any session.

How many sessions would I need?
Some counsellors suggest a minimum number of sessions, when contracting.  I have no set minimum or maximum number of sessions.  As a very general rule of thumb, people tend to have between 6 and 20 sessions, but you may only require one or two sessions. Some people choose to have a regular appointment, say once a fortnght or month as part of their mental health self care plan.

I'm known to most people as Charlie and have been employed as a full-time counsellor, then psychotherapist since 2014; working with adults and children, both one to one and facilitating therapeutic groups.  Prior to this I spent over ten years working in the field of conflict resolution, behaviour change programmes and parenting support; all of which required a strong, supportive working relationship with clients.

Alongside my work within organisations, I also have a private practice offering counselling support for a range of issues.  I work with clients both face-to-face and online, using Zoom.  This is a confidential encrypted app that is free to use and easy to download, should this be your preferred option I am happy to help you get set up to use this for our appointments.
My aim is to offer you a warm and welcoming space, in which you can explore your concerns, discover a deeper understanding of yourself, and a renewed sense of self worth.  This enables you to confidence as you move forward.

Experience and training

I graduated with a Diploma in Integrative Psychotherapy and Counselling in 2015 and have worked as a full-time counsellor ever since.

In 2021 I completed my Psychotherapist Accreditation with the BACP the governing body for Counselling and Psychotherapy.

My approach is Transpersonal (where the therapist and client move beyond the traditional "expert and patient" dynamic. Instead, we enter into a partnership that views us both as spiritual beings having a human experience. Sessions are also Person-Centred, following the model of Carl Rogers, This approach puts significant emphasis on the trusting, compassionate, non-judgemental relationship between client and therapist.

I also have knowledge and experience of using other therapeutic models, such as CBT, Gestalt  and Transactional Analysis, working creatively when and where it is appropriate for my client.

With six years experience as a Supervisor within the counselling team for an organisation, I am now completing a Level 7 post graduate qualification in Supervision and so have opened up a limited number of private practice supervision spaces.  Please feel free to email or call me to explore working together and answer any queries you may have.

Other specialised training includes:

Foundation Diploma in Facilitation of Group AnalyticTherapy

Dip. In Grief and Bereavement Theory

OU Introduction to Death, Dying and Grief

OU Certificate in Attachment and Early Childhood

Training in working with families experiencing childhood bereavement – Winston’s Wish

OCN certificate in Counselling Online

I am happy to recommend alternative specialist practitioners or organisations where appropriate.
